Spanish Tapas ”Sol”

Sol is a new Spanish tapas restaurant in underneath cocktail bar Bourgeois Pig in Greenwich Village. Atmosphere is casual, dark and sexy. The restaurant itself only 16 stool plus a one small high table in the middle. I sat at the chef’s counter right in front of the kitchen which gives you full view of the small, open kitchen where chef owner D’Ambrosi and his sous chef were working away. I tried 5 different dishes and everything was really delicious and it was beyond my expectation. My favorite thing was Langoustine – Egg Yolk, Matchstick Potato, Crustacean Sauce.

Pipa – 38 East 19th NYC NY 10013 ( CLOSED )

If you’re in the mood for Spanish Tapas, Pipa is great place to go (so is Alta)! Start your dinner with a great pitcher of sangria. The menu is wide and everything is very good. The portions of some dishes are small like the croquette, but most of the dishes are generous in size and price. My favorites included the sautéed octopus, mushroom flat bread, and many more. Great place to go with groups of people while sharing many different dishes. The atmosphere is sexy shabby chic… the entire ceiling is covered by beautiful vintage chandeliers from ABC Carpet & Home! P.S. The other night when I was there they had a live band & flamenco dancer, which made it an even more exotic dining experience, but quite loud so it depends on your occasion.

This is one of the largest restaurants that has opened in the LES with 10,000 square feet on two floors. I believe it’s Chef Chris Santos‘s second restaurant in NYC (he owns Stanton Social a few block away).  The ambiance is more of the style in the Meat Packing area where the space is very flashy and luxurious (think circa Glam 70s and sexy!). This is the spot to go with a bunch of friends, not if you want to have an intimate dinner or with parents who are in town. The main dining room is downstairs and upstairs is lounge style (you can order the full menu upstairs too.) Their tapas menu is big & food is very good. Often at this type of giant sized trendy spot the food is just ok …but everything here is very good. The bone marrow with shallot marmalade is one of the best I EVER had, even better than Prune’s …and I love Prune. Trendy Japanese Shishito Peppers are a must to order and share. The tapas size & price is fair except for their meatballs (after I found out it was $18, I will never order it again, especially when a few blocks away you can have amazing meatballs for $7 at The Meatball Shop).

Oven Braised Chicken Meatballs sheep’s milk ricotta, wild mushroom, truffle $18 – Just 3 meatballs for $18, skip it ! It’s not all that ♥♥
