Birds & Bubbles opened this week at the former space of Grotto near the border of Chinatown and Lower East Side.
Besides the fried chicken and champagne, some of menu is more French tapas than southern cuisine in my opinion. For example, the tomato pie and croquette I ordered. Their champagne selection is large and, of course, very expensive! But if you are not into bubbles don’t worry, they also serve wine, cocktails, and beer. My friend very much enjoyed the tea champagne cocktail. I was in the mood for white wine and they had three choices of white wine by the glass. My pick was Amycas 2011 by Brooks.
Before my visit I asked my blogger friend Mike A.K.A. Food Baby NYC for his recommendations. He came here for dinner on the first day of opening. He suggested I sit in the outdoor garden. I ended up starting my dinner inside, but as soon as a table was available we moved to an outdoor table. It was lovely to run into my blogger friend Eva Rock Shic in the garden. How cute that she was on date night with her hubby! She told me how yummy tomato pie was, so I had to try it with the croquette for an appetizer. Three of us had two orders of the half chicken in a bucket with mac & cheese on the side.
The food was OK, but I recommend this place more for their interesting location. If you’re looking for a great outdoor dining experience before the weather gets cold, this is your little downtown gem. So hurry to Birds & Bubbles before the outdoor garden is no longer open!

Fat Radish

www.thefatradishnyc.com 17 Orchard St New York, NY

Ever since the Fat Radish opened last year they became an instant “IT” eatery of Chinatown/LES. The new resty is owned by two British owners who also own a catering and event group called Silkstone. They created dishes that use local and seasonable ingredients with an English twist. The menu is unexpected like mako shark from Montauk, market veggies from locol farmers, or a guilty pleasure duck fat french fries. I recently enjoyed a summer pie with multiple kinds of Peas baked in an amazing crust and it was phenomenal…so fresh and creamy and I liked how it looked too – so cute and puffy (^_^) Too bad the Mako Shark with Wild Rice was unusual but apparently (>_<)””. I will try their Scotch Egg next time (if it’s still on the menu; the great thing about this place is they seem to change the menu seasonally and there’s always a special of the day ). I will report back on some of Cutie Patroller’s “must order dishes” to you soon. The place has chic and rustic decor and the space is cutie with great atmosphere. In some way it reminds me of ABC Kitchen but a more casual LES version and the similar to the vibe of Freemans ( if this helps you to get an idea of the place ). Go with a bunch of friends or date any night of the week or for weekend brunch.

Gentleman Farmer

www.gentlemanfarmernyc.com – 40 Rivington St (at Forsyth and Eldridge Streets)

Cutie Room‘s hood-patrolling report is here (^_^). I want to welcome this teeny, tiny French restaurant that opened last year in my neighborhood next to the cute wine bar Jadis . When I was there I could see the chef & owner cooking by himself with his sous chef in this tiny 5’x5′ kitchen; so you can imagine how intimate this 10 table, 20 seat place is. This place has a great food & wine selection. The Pate had an interesting twist-more in the style of shepherd’s pie. The Pear Purse was a great savory dish. The Beef Tenderloin with Foie Gras entree was perfection, with a really generous size as you can see pictured below. I like places like this where every dish feels personal, made from the chef’s own hand. I recommend Gentleman Farmer for a date or friends, but remember the space is petite, like you are at somebody’s intimate dinner party.

Freemans

www.freemansrestaurant.com – End of Freeman Alley ( At Rivington St )

This place is one of the first eateries to start the Gastropub trend that started in New York. Freemans has now become a Downtown LES classic. Which other restaurant in New York City is located at the end of a non-descript dark alley ? ( I think Commerce at Greenwich village is on a unique street but they’re not on an alley ). An absolutely must- order dish is the Artichoke Dip (believe me, it is worth making a trip just to taste this! ) Some of their dishes change by season, but the Beer Braised Pork Shank that I had there last time was soooo yummy -if you see it on the menu Cutie Patroller highly recommends you order it! The atmosphere inside is hip & cool and they are always busy. The space is dim and decorated with dark woods and stuffed taxidermy (eek!) but it has a very vintage feel to it, almost like an English country club in the middle of NYC. Currently, they now have an open upstairs area (^_^).

Beauty & Essex

www.beautyandessex.com146 Essex St , NYC

This is one of the largest restaurants that has opened in the LES with 10,000 square feet on two floors. I believe it’s Chef Chris Santos‘s second restaurant in NYC (he owns Stanton Social a few block away).  The ambiance is more of the style in the Meat Packing area where the space is very flashy and luxurious (think circa Glam 70s and sexy!). This is the spot to go with a bunch of friends, not if you want to have an intimate dinner or with parents who are in town. The main dining room is downstairs and upstairs is lounge style (you can order the full menu upstairs too.) Their tapas menu is big & food is very good. Often at this type of giant sized trendy spot the food is just ok …but everything here is very good. The bone marrow with shallot marmalade is one of the best I EVER had, even better than Prune’s …and I love Prune. Trendy Japanese Shishito Peppers are a must to order and share. The tapas size & price is fair except for their meatballs (after I found out it was $18, I will never order it again, especially when a few blocks away you can have amazing meatballs for $7 at The Meatball Shop).

Bacaro

www.bacaronyc.com       136 Division Street  New York, NY 10002

Explore LES and try Bacaro the next time you go! This place is a sure thing for a group (select one of the great private rooms) or a romantic date without hurting his wallet as every dish is so reasonable under $20. Though it’s maybe not great for the parents as it’s a bit too hipster LES, take them to chef-owner Frank DeCarlo’s other restaurant Peasant or Apizz (owned by his former partner). Bacaro restaurant is hidden on tiny Division St at the edge of LES and the beginning of Chinatown. Once you step inside Bacaro, the first floor has a cute bar and black wall with white marble tables but wait until you see the cavernous space downstairs which is sooooo special!!! As soon as you start down the stairs you are in an old world Italian castle fashioned with exposed bricks, pillars, a wonderful ceiling, old style tall candles, wine cellar and a bunch of interesting rooms. Food is not as great as the chef’s other restaurants but price & atmosphere will make it up big time so Cutie Patroller is still giving this Venetian style Italian restaurant 4.5 stars.
