Katz’s Delicatessen

Katz's Delicatessen

Katz’s Delicatessen Since 1888

Cuisine: Delis, Sandwiches

Neighborhood: Lower East Side

Occasion: Good for lunch, late night snack

Famous Dishes: Pastrami Sandwich, Brisket Sandwich, Matzo ball soup

History From Restaurant: In 1888, a small deli by the name of Iceland Brothers was established on Ludlow Street in New York’s Lower East Side by the Iceland brothers. Upon the arrival of Willy Katz in 1903, the name of the store was officially changed to “Iceland & Katz”. Willy’s cousin Benny joined him in 1910, buying out the Iceland brothers to officially form Katz’s Delicatessen. Their landsman Harry Tarowsky bought into the partnership in April 1917. Katz’s Deli was moved across the street, to its present location, during the construction of the subway system. The vacant lot on Houston Street (pronounced “House-ton” after a Dutch emigrant of the same name) was home to barrels of meat and pickles until the present storefront facade was added between 1946-49.

GRILLED OYSTERS, GARLIC, PARSLEY ♥♥♥♥1/2

Dirty French is now open for lunch! I had Lamb burger and dry aged beef sandwich to share with friend. Both dishes were just OK but flatbread was warm and delish. I also highly recommend you to try Grilled oysters! This dish was O.M.G the best grilled oyster I ever had in my life! I’m just warning you it was very very garlicky! Atmosphere was lovely at lunchtime 🙂 I would love to try Lamb Carpaccio from dinner menu next time.

Ivan Ramen opened a second location in the Lower East Side earlier this spring. Although I was disappointed with the ramen at their first location in Gotham West Market last year, I decided to give it another try at this new location.

I ordered two different kinds of appetizers and two different kinds of ramen. I’m sorry, but all four dishes were not for me. 😦  I’m giving it a two star rating for food. However, I’m giving it 3 hearts overall which I think is a more important rating. The best thing about this place is that they have an outdoor space in back. Since I came here in the early spring the weather was still cold, so I sat inside. I am sure people enjoy sitting in the outdoor back room during the summer time. I suggest you try the outdoor atmosphere yourself before the weather gets cold. This place still has buzz right now.

Birds & Bubbles opened this week at the former space of Grotto near the border of Chinatown and Lower East Side.
Besides the fried chicken and champagne, some of menu is more French tapas than southern cuisine in my opinion. For example, the tomato pie and croquette I ordered. Their champagne selection is large and, of course, very expensive! But if you are not into bubbles don’t worry, they also serve wine, cocktails, and beer. My friend very much enjoyed the tea champagne cocktail. I was in the mood for white wine and they had three choices of white wine by the glass. My pick was Amycas 2011 by Brooks.
Before my visit I asked my blogger friend Mike A.K.A. Food Baby NYC for his recommendations. He came here for dinner on the first day of opening. He suggested I sit in the outdoor garden. I ended up starting my dinner inside, but as soon as a table was available we moved to an outdoor table. It was lovely to run into my blogger friend Eva Rock Shic in the garden. How cute that she was on date night with her hubby! She told me how yummy tomato pie was, so I had to try it with the croquette for an appetizer. Three of us had two orders of the half chicken in a bucket with mac & cheese on the side.
The food was OK, but I recommend this place more for their interesting location. If you’re looking for a great outdoor dining experience before the weather gets cold, this is your little downtown gem. So hurry to Birds & Bubbles before the outdoor garden is no longer open!
