Sol

Sol

Spanish Tapas ”Sol”

Chef Owner: Andrew D’Ambrosi

Sol is a new Spanish tapas restaurant in underneath cocktail bar Bourgeois Pig in Greenwich Village. Atmosphere is casual, dark and sexy. The restaurant itself only 16 stool plus a one small high table in the middle. I sat at the chef’s counter right in front of the kitchen which gives you full view of the small, open kitchen where chef owner D’Ambrosi and his sous chef were working away. I tried 5 different dishes and everything was really delicious and it was beyond my expectation. My favorite thing was Langoustine – Egg Yolk, Matchstick Potato, Crustacean Sauce.

Cuisine: Spanish Tapas

Neighborhood: Greenwich Village

Recommend Dishes: Langoustine – Egg Yolk, Matchstick Potato, Crustacean Sauce $17. Octopus – Farro, Chickpea, Broccolini, Onion $24.

Occassion: I was here for dinner.

Seat: I recommend to sit at the chef’s counter.

Casa mono

Michelin Star Tapas ”Casa Mono”

photo1 (1)Duck Egg with Mojama and Black Truffles $18

Casa Mono is a Michelin one star restaurant located on the east side of Union Square at Irving Place (on the corner of 18th St. & 17th St.) This restaurant has been one of my favorite tapas places in New York for a long time. They serve many interesting tapas. However, if you are expecting one of those regular Italian or Spanish tapas restaurants, then this is not the place for you. I call it a tapas wine bar because everything is smaller in portion, yet the price is on the high side. I would consider each dish to be more like an appetizer with an entree price point. Make sure you try everything and order a bunch of different dishes with your group of friends. You will probably get a big bill, but each dish is so unique and delicious that you will walk away with one big, happy smile. 🙂 If you are on a date night, I recommend that you sit at the counter seat so you can enjoy watching the kitchen’s action.

Here are some of my favorite dishes that I would highly recommend you to order:

*Foie Gras with Cinco Cebollas $19
*Fideos with Chorizo, Sea Beans and Clams $18
*Stuffed Lamb Belly with Artichoke Purée, Blood Oranges and Radicchio $16
They are open for lunch as well as dinner and serve the same menu. Please make sure to call for a reservation ahead of time because you won’t have much luck if you think you can just walk in for dinner. The place is always SuPa SuPa busy.

Bobby Flay’s newest restaurant, Gato, opened a few months ago on Lafayette Street in NoHo. I’m sure you’ve probably been to one of Chef Flay’s restaurants before such as Mesa Grill (closed) or Bar Americain. Honestly, I wasn’t much of a fan of his restaurants, but I changed my mind after visiting Gato! I even went twice within one month which is unusual for me. Chef Flay has created a very impressive, new style of Mediterranean cuisine. On your first visit you must try the tapas listed at the top of their menu. You can choose three tapas for $17. I tried 6 dishes between the two times I visited. I forgot a camera my second time there, so I don’t have food photos of everything I ate. My favorite tapas was the Beef Crudo, Lamb Tenderloin, and Piquillo Filled With Raw Tuna. You can see my photos below.

DSC02010

I enjoyed the rabbit with couscous so much that I ordered it again on my second visit. This time the dish came with vegetables instead of fava beans. If you read my blog regularly, you know that I’m a huge fan of fava beans! So, I wish it came like that all the time. It was still yummy, though. 😉

RABBIT FREGULA SARDA, CHANTERELLES, PEAS, CARROT HOT SAUCE $30 ♥♥♥♥

I love that you can see the kitchen through a glass window because you can watch Chef Flay hard at work. It was wonderful to meet him on my first visit, too! 😉 I recommend Gato for any night of the week. I also suggest you go soon while Chef Flay is still cooking everything himself. I believe the first few months after an opening a famous chef will work in the kitchen to make sure operations run well. Don’t miss your chance for his personal touch to your meal 🙂

Aria Wine Bar

Cute Tapas in West Village ”Aria Wine Bar”

The ambiance is quite loud and crowded. This means it may not be the place for date night, but I definitely recommend it for a girls’ get-together!! The place itself is small with a cute atmosphere. I’m sure it depends on the day of the week, but my first and last visits here were SuPa busy. The menu is reasonable and shockingly all very tasty, too. Probably one of the best $9 beef carpaccio I have ever had in NY. (My favorite Carpaccio is still at Bar Pitti in Greenwich Village. Recently I had amazing Veal Carpaccio at Minetta Tavern, too.) I was here with myTabelog teammates, Kenta a.k.a Lord of the Forks, and my boss, Shouhei, from Japan. We enjoyed catching up and sharing the tapas plates together. They don’t take reservations for parties under six people so it can be a bit hard to make a plan to come here. This time we walked right in and were lucky that we didn’t have to wait. We sat at a long community table with other groups, most of which were girls. In fact, the crowd was 90% girls. Girls always know cute, yummy and reasonable places in city *\(^_^)/*
