Lunch & Dinner at Upland
Chef Justin Smilie, who left Il Buco Alimentari, has now created a contemporary Californian/Italian cooking at this brand new restaurant called Upland in the Flatiron District. Upland is run by Stephen Starr known for Buddakan, Morimoto, Caffe Storico and many other restaurants in the NYC and Philadelphia areas. I don’t have many food options to go to in the area near my office besides Marta on 29th St. Upland is definitely great new addition. The decor and vibe of this place is classy and lovely, yet very casual and relaxing. It’s a great place for just two or a group of people. However, right now they have a maximum of a party of six.
It was the second week after opening when I went with four of my teammates for an after work dinner. My absolute favorite dish was the Estrella chicken liver. The Bucatini Carbonara was good too, but not as good as the Estrella. For an appetizer I loved the Live Scallop Crudo with sea beans. I also enjoyed the Beef Tartar, Roasted Lamb Confit, and Branzino, but they were not as memorable as the other two dishes (estrella and scallops). One of the most wonderful things about this place is their wine list. 500varieties from all over the world with many different price points. I’m going back this week just for a drink with a friend. They are still only open for dinner right now. Hopefully they’ll soon open for lunch.
